TNH seeks Superintendent of Highways:

The Superintendent of Highways is responsible for maintenance and construction of Town roads. He or she is responsible for ensuring that all operations are carried out efficiently and safely. The Superintendent‘s duties include all aspects of road integrity including pot hole repair, snow removal, clean-up after major storms, maintenance of existing and placement of new traffic and parking signs, road drainage and catch basin maintenance/repair, maintenance, removal and replacement of trees and vegetation adjacent to roads. The Superintendent is also responsible for acquisition and maintenance of all equipment necessary for these duties.

The Superintendent manages a full time staff of over 100 people at five locations, including two maintenance garages, one sign shop, and an administrative office. The Superintendent fulfills a position whose duties are mandated by State and Town law such as determining whether roads can be created or closed, and whether road opening permits will be granted. The Superintendent must keep up to date with requirements under state and federal law for roadways including ADA requirements, environmental requirements and highway, curb and intersection safety design. The Superintendent will be expected to provide high quality and responsive service to Town residents.

Requirements: BA or BS required, preference for civil engineering degree. Minimum of five years of supervisory experience. Prior Highway public works experience preferred. Familiarity with governmental expense and capital budgeting, governmental procurement and managing a unionized workforce a plus.

Directs an assigned phase of the highway planning or traffic control program; performs related duties as required.

Under supervison, the position is professional and subject to review for adherence to objectives.

1. Conducts comprehensive engineering studies in a phase of highway planning or traffic control, including origin and destination studies, parking surveys, and speed and delay studies.
2. Analyzes data and prepares charts, maps, and graphs depicting the results.
3. Reviews reports and recommendations for various types of traffic control devices; initiates
investigations in response to requests for traffic controls.
4. Prepares plans and specifications for signs, signals, and pavement markings.

1. Knowledge of traffic engineering, including the areas of traffic control and highway planning.
2. Knowledge of the techniques and procedures involved in analysis of traffic and parking problems.
3. Knowledge of the methods of investigating and analyzing highway traffic conditions.
4. Knowledge of highway safety control measures.
5. Knowledge of highway design and construction as related to traffic control.
6. Knowledge of sign and signal design, installation, and maintenance.
7. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, municipal officials, and the general public.

Training and Experience
Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or New York State registered college or university with a major in Engineering
Two years of satisfactory post bachelor's degree experience as an Engineer.

This will be a provisional position until Civil Service approves the candidate for permanent status. To qualify for this position the Applicant must be a Nassau County Resident and be prepared to take the Traffic Engineer Civil Service Exam once given.

  CAD Draftsperson

The CAD Draftsperson will be responsible for assisting in the creation engineering documentation.

• Create detailed drawings utilizing pertinent views, cross sections, detail views, and critical dimensions.

• Proficient with AutoCAD including typical line-work drawing creation, importing backgrounds, back-checking, drawing, editing, viewpoint manipulation, printing, dimensioning, layering isometric diagrams
• Ability to manage time effectively and work the minimal supervision

• Will receive specific instructions from individual project managers and project engineers.

• Degree or Certificate in mechanical drafting, or equivalent experience, preferred.

• CAD competency and proficiency with AutoCAD 2014 are critical to this position.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)

• Successful candidate must be organized, have attention-to-detail and have excellent communication skills

• Other responsibilities include job organization, data entry, form completion with customers and contractors, etc.

• Must have the ability to write, speak and read in English Job


• Minimum two year degree from an accredited technical school for drafting or engineering technology or relevant experience or a minimum of four years of CAD experience.

• Minimum four years relevant experience.

  • Utilize technical skills in storm water management, hydraulics, hydrological analysis, grading and other site development related skills to assist with the preparation of subdivision and land development designs; including: commercial, mixed-use, residential and other types of projects.
  • Provide engineering support during design, permitting, development, and construction for various land development projects;
  • Working with municipalities towards approval and permits;

  • Applying judgment on design decisions and selection from standard engineering techniques and alternatives;
  • Prepare hydrology and earthwork evaluations;
  • Prepare engineering reports and submittals; and

Qualified applicants should possess all or some of the following:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related field;
  • 5-10 years of experience providing engineering planning, design and oversight on land development projects;
  • Experience with stormwater management, grading & drainage design, sanitary & roadway profiles, site planning & conceptual site layouts, zoning ordinance review and research, lighting design, cuts/fills, earthwork quantities, erosion and sedimentation control design and permitting;
  • Computer skills in AutoCAD, Land Development Desktop, Civil 3D, Excel, hydrology and earthwork software;
  • Experience applying professional knowledge and prescribed procedures to progressively difficult problems;
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, team-based atmosphere;
  • Strong organizational and communication skills;
  • A professional demeanor, and a can-do attitude.
  • PE license is a plus.
