The Long Island Chapter of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers (NYSSE) provides scholar awards to high school seniors, college students, and graduate students who reside in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Students must be enrolled in an ABET-accredited engineering program in the State of New York. Awarding of the scholarships is contingent upon several criteria including academics, work experience, community service, extracurricular activities, and high aspirations for a career in engineering.
Saunderson Hunt Rubler Scholarship
The Saunderson Hunt Rubler Scholarship fund was established through endowments from the estates of Mssrs. Saunderson, Hunt, and Rubler who were past-Presidents of the Nassau County Chapter of NYSSPE during their tenures in the 1930’s and 1940’s and were passionate about the engineering profession and promoting the development of young engineers. Scholarships are awarded annually to recent high school graduates, undergraduate students and graduate students from Long Island who are enrolled in an ABET-accredited engineering program at a college or university in New York State.
- High School– The Saunderson Hunt Rubler Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school senior who has enrolled in an ABET-accredited engineering program at a college or university in New York State. The scholarship amount is $1,000. Apply now!
- Undergraduate – The Saunderson Hunt Rubler Scholarship is awarded annually to undergraduate students who have completed at least their sophomore year of studies and are pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program at a college or university in New York State. Gilbert Friedenreich, P.E. Memorial Scholarship
The Gilbert Friedenreich, P.E. Memorial Scholarship was established in 2024 by his family to honor the memory of Gilbert Friedenreich who passed away in December 2022. As a dual graduate from New York University (BME ‘50, MME ‘55), Mr. Friedenreich enjoyed a long and accomplished professional career in the aerospace industry on Long Island; starting in test engineering for turbo-jet engine development at Fairchild Engine Division and culminating in retirement from the Grumman Corporation in 1992 as the Director of Technical Auditing in the Corporate Engineering division. In his last position at retirement, he was responsible for the audit of technical activities in all Divisions, Flight Readiness Reviews (FFR), and Pre-Board activities in preparation of releasing new or modified vehicles for flight. Previous assignments at Grumman included Director of Program Engineering Management, Manager of System Development and Integration, and Head of Reliability, Maintainability and Systems Safety. During his career, Mr. Friedenreich was an active member in NYSSPE as a long-time member on the Board of Directors of the Nassau Chapter of NYSSPE and chaired and/or served on numerous committees at the State and Chapter levels. Additionally, Mr. Friedenreich spent several years as an adjunct professor teaching Systems Engineering to graduate students in the mechanical engineering department at Stony Brook University. Mr. Friedenreich was also recognized for his professional achievements and service to the engineering profession as a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Nassau Chapter of NYSSPE and the P.E. Manager of the Year Award for his outstanding demonstrated management capabilities and professional leadership from NYSSPE in 1981.
- Undergraduate / Graduate – The Gilbert Friedenreich, P.E. Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student (who has completed at least their sophomore year of studies) or a graduate student from Long Island who is enrolled in the New York University Tandon School of Engineering. NYSSPE LI Chapter FE Exam Reimbursement
The Long Island Chapter of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers (NYSSE) provides reimbursement of the $175 Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam fee to recent graduates or students who are close to finishing a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program in New York State and passed the NCEES FE exam during the past twelve months.
FE Exam Reimbursement Eligibility
- Candidates must have achieved a passing grade on an NCEES FE exam.
- Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of (within two years of degree completion) an ABET-accredited engineering program at a college or university in New York State.
- Candidates must have a permanent Long Island address.
- Candidates must be NSPE members or student members.
- Candidates must be endorsed by a member of the NYSSPE – Long Island Chapter.
Application Materials
- A completed FE Exam Reimbursement Application Form.
- Proof of passing grade on an NCEES FE Exam completed in the past 12 months.
Application Submission and Deadline
- To apply candidates must submit the application materials listed to the mailing address or e-mail address below. Application packages must be postmarked or e-mailed by within the twelve month period following the passed exam for consideration by the FE Exam Reimbursement Committee.
